News Bulletin

  • Birds that are more likely to be prey grow longer wings- It seems that the constant threat of predation could have a more subtle effect on prey animals than first thought.Female birds that are exposed to predators while they are ovulating produce smaller offspring than unexposed females, researchers have found. The chicks may be smaller, but surprisingly, their wings grow faster and longer than those of chicks from unexposed mothers — an adaptation that might make them better at avoiding predators in flight.
  •  Journey to the mantle of the earth- On the 50th anniversary of the first attempt to drill into Earth's mantle, Damon Teagle and BenoĆ®t Ildefonse say that what was once science fiction is now possible.
That's it for this week, no juicy news.

News Bulletin

  • Nuclear Plant busted in Japan, there maybe acid rain in the following days.
  • Reforest 'Bombings'. How can we reforest areas hard to get to? Moshe Alamaro, MIT engineering student, has a great idea: aerial 'bombing' of tree seedlings in biodegradable containers that hold food and water. Dropped from planes, the seedlings in cone shaped containers would bury themselves in the ground and have enough nutrients and water to keep them growing until rains can bring their life-sustaining necessities. A single flight could plant 100,000 trees.

Clean Water Act's 25th Birthday. According to the National Resource Development Council, while there are still incredible problems in the nation's waterways, the Clean Water Act has done incredible good: Since 1970, discharge of untreated sewage into the nation's rivers have decreased by 90%; Wetland losses in the past decade have averaged 200,000 acres a year less than in the 70's and 80's; Without the Act, more than a billion additional pounds of toxic pollutants would be added to our surface waters every year; In 1970, only about 36% of our rivers and lakes were safe for swimming, but today it's about 65%. As the NRDC said, "To all of us who ever swim in, fished in, waded in, or just gazed at a lake or river, the Clean Water Act is not merely one of the most sane and sensible federal programs ever created. It's an essential."
